6 Features On Tiger Brokers Desktop App That Gives Investors An Edge

You might have seen the introductory article that I wrote on Tiger Brokers when they first launched in Singapore sometime in June this year.

If you have not seen the article yet, you may refer to them here.

Tiger Brokers made a huge headline within the community with its very attractive fee structure and commission fees that hardly any brokerage or other custodian platforms can match.

While most users were relatively new to the platform back then, they hesitated about the reliability of the platform and the availability of the feature. After all, everyone was expecting the minimal when they signed up for the broker because of the low fees.

I was one of those users who were initially skeptical about the low commission fee structure but went to sign up for it anyway.

Over time, I explored and used plenty of the features that the desktop (and mobile) app provides and has increasingly grown fond of it. Today, the app becomes one of my go-to places for research and analysis before I place my trade or position in a stock.

Here are 6 features on the Desktop App that I most frequently used for my research:

1.) Pre-Market and After-Hours Trading Activities

Stock exchange trading hours in the US run using three distinct sessions: Pre-Market, Regular Session, and After-Hours.

Pre-market runs from 4am-9.30am Eastern Standard Time, regular session runs from 9.30am - 4pm, and after-hours runs from 4pm-8pm.

You may think you are done with the regular market hours but some of the most important market movements can take place outside the regular session.

I like the fact that the Tiger platform allows investors the option to trade outside the regular market hours should the need arise.

For instance, when Pfizer announced the first vaccine news in the early hours on the 9th November 2020 that give 90% immunity effectiveness, I immediately went to purchase 150 shares of SPG Simon Property on the pre-market at the price of $72.48. It turned out to be a good decision as the market went parabolic sky high during the opening of the regular trading session and I managed to sell the stock the following day at the price of $79.47, locking in a 9.6% return in a space of within a day.

When the euphoria of the vaccine news died down a few days later, I managed to purchase again the shares at $73 before releasing them all on the pre-market trading session on the 16th Nov 2020 when Moderna announced its 94% immunity effectiveness. I locked in another 9.5% return within a space of 4 days.

You would see that it is not always petals and roses as you can see that I tried to replicate the same logic with AMC Entertainment on the same day Moderna announced its vaccine news but it doesn't work and so I had to incur a loss.

Nevertheless, it does gives you the option should you want to trade pre-market or after-hours sessions.

2.) Capital Funds Movement and Existing Open Short Positions In The Market

The capital market plays an important role in immobilizing institutional and retail funds channeling them into a specific order movement that might be very important to short and mid-term momentum traders.

This will allow traders (usually short and mid-term players) to position their trades following a particular flow of funds to ride the trend for the companies they are invested in for a few weeks or quarters.

Take a retail gaming company, Gamestop (NYSE: GME) for instance.

To view the Capital Flow, simply click on GME -> Funds/Others. You may need to scroll down depending on your screen size.

On the 18th of November 2020, there was a total of 15.68m (48.07%) of capital inflow that buys GME while the capital outflow during the session stands at 16.93m (51.93%).

While it looks like it may be evenly distributed throughout the session, you would see that most of the capital flow is happening in the first two hours after the market opens then sizzles down lower to almost no activity as it approaches the end of the session.

The capital flow here is defined as the direction in which funds in the stock market actively choose and is analyzed from the perspective of quantity, i.e volume, and amount of transactions.

This might be a useful indicator for a short-term trader as it will allow the trader to spot early movement to where most of the funds are flowing in the first few opening hours of the session.

The platform also allows visibility to the amount of open short positions that the market has on the company. As it stands, GME has an open short position of close to 70M which likely is the main reason for the pressured price movement in the past few weeks.

3.) Funds & Institutional Shareholding Changes On The Company

Institutional Holdings information is one of the most important information for an investor as it allows one to assess who are the few substantial shareholders that hold key to the decision of the company when it comes to voting rights.

This information is filed by major institutions on Form 13-F with the Securities and Exchange Commission 45 days after the calendar quarter-end.

To view the institutional holdings, simply click on the stocks you want -> Funds/Others. You may need to scroll down depending on your screen size.

As you can see below, the platform gives a clean quick look at who the biggest shareholdings are for Bank of America, which in this case Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is holding 9.96% and second in place Vanguard Group Inc. is holding 7.04%. You can also see the recent quarter movement where Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has added 31.08m this quarter while everyone else is reducing their stakes.

If you believe in the legend of Omaha, Warren Buffet, and what he is doing, then you can build a position next to him for the long term. For disclosure in my previous portfolio update, I am bullish on banks and hold a vested position in Bank of America.

4.) Call and Put Options

Many people probably don't know this but you can actually trade basic options strategy on the Tiger Brokers platform.

Take Sea Ltd for instance, a leading e-commerce company that operates in three businesses - Garena, Shopee, and SeaMoney.

If you are bullish on the company, you can initiate a position by either taking a long position on the call option or a short position on a put option.

Conversely, if you are bearish on the company, you can either initiate a short position on the call option or go long on a put.

The amount of premium, strike price, and timeframe will determine the conviction you have on your decision.

Personally, I don't believe in an overly complex set-up so if unless you are very comfortable with understanding how the mechanic of option works, it is okay to give it a skip.

5.) Technical Analysis Indicators - EMA, MACD, RSI, CCI

For technical traders, you would be pleased that the platform supports a rather established chart and indicators to help you decide on your position.

For myself, I am not overly sophisticated in technical charts so some of the basic indicators set-ups I am using are just EMA, MACD, CCI, and RSI. For more sophisticated traders, there are tons of other indicators that you can add to the chart.

The interface is incredibly simple to set up and user-friendly which makes it very easy even for beginners like me to use.

6.) Fundamental Analysis - PE, PB, Dividend Yield, Trend Changes, Comparison Across Competitors

For investors who rely on fundamental investing for the analysis, you may be pleased to know that the platform offers a quick glance at some of the important key valuation metrics such as Price to Earnings, Price to Book Value, Dividend Yield, and Return on Equity that is easy to navigate.

You would also be able to see all the immediate company's announcements including recent corporation action and results announcement, as well as a comparison across the competitors within the same industry.

All the above information can be accessed by going to the individual stock -> Filings or Materials.

Another aspect that I find interesting is it will also track the changes in the market movement in the share price on a certain period, for example before or after dividends are declared. This way, you could see some of the sensitive behavior of how the prices move when it comes to future corporate announcements.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it some of the features that I frequent and use a lot when using it myself.

I've been using Tiger as my primary platform for my HK and US stocks as it not only offers the most competitive fees out there but they have some of the most awesome features which I am liking it a lot.

I would encourage everyone who has not used them to try out some of their features and see if you like them. Even if you already have other brokerages to trade on (I have a few of them myself), it doesn't hurt to sign up and try and see if this would compare better than your current ones.

If you like what you see and would like to give it a try, do use my exclusive invitation code 4321CP or simply by clicking here. You'd be entitled to a Tiger reward of up to $100 the moment you start depositing and putting your money to work.

  2. Hi! I rly enjoy reading your posts!

How do you decide the appropriate allocation between US marketd and SG markets? I’ve just started working early Aug and have been actively pouring money into both markets.

My current allocation is very very heavily weighted into the US markets. At the same time, I have been fervently pouring into safe, mid-high yields, reits and sgx stocks that consistently deliver solid dividends.

My total net worth is around 50% in cash and 50% in stocks (abit more due to capital gains from my US holdings).

Any recommendations as a person just starting work?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi there

Your allocation is very healthy, with a balanced view of cash and equities. The sg market is a lot more muted and catered more towards the dividend side whereas US you can always find leading companies for better growth ahead. Both sides have its own pros and cons so it's up to an individual to see where it fits one better.

  3. Hi Brian,

I had been reading your posts and do appreciate what you have shared. I'm just wondering if you can share with us how do you decide when to sell a stock which you had initially bought for dividend income ? I'm very perplexed always when it comes to this. For eg, if the stock had increased by 200% do I sell or hold on to it still for the dividends, since it's quite impossible for me to get the stock back at the initial low price. Thank you in advance.

    1. Hi Lynn

Selling is indeed a lot harder as we may never be able to get back some of them at a cheaper price, but there will also be instances where you locked in profits and the market undergoes correction to give us a better entry price.

I think in a clear uptrend I would probably try to hold for it longer while where the market is more volatile I would prefer to take in and lock in profits from time to time.

  5. Hi, your article title seems rathee misleading. Perhaps its only me but I had the impression you were doing a comparison of Tiger's desktop app v.s. mobile app because all the 6 features you mentioned can be found in the mobile app as well
